![]() Dear Friends, Love is in the air as we open the month of February -- love for our country, love for for the poor and love for the environment that is! We at Human Nature are spreading the love through fantastic all natural and locally made products and through our advocacy of helping communities improve quality of life. Now, dealers will have another chance to participate in our advocacies through the Gawad Kalinga Bayani Challenge in Batayan Island, Cebu. Human Nature is recruiting dealers and customers to form teams that will build houses, clean up beaches and plant mangroves in the GK site in the scenic island alongside local and international volunteers. Check out the details below on how to join. We would also like to encourage our Metro Manila and Luzon dealers to visit the GK Enchanted Farm in Angat, Bulacan where the Human Nature Demo Farm is located. We recently celebrated my son, Wolfie's first birthday together with 20 GK kids from the community with a farm themed Explorer Party. Our city kids planted lemongrass, weeded the vegetable garden, fed goats and hunted for chicken eggs alongside the GK kids. It was a fun and meaningful way to celebrate family milestones and sharing our blessings with the community. If you're interested to do the same, please contact Frank Chiu of GK Enchanted Farm at 09175457225. Just last December, our very own Human Nature Global Ambassador was in Vietnam to judge the 2010 Ms. Earth Pageant. It's heart-warming to know that many lovely ladies all over the world have now embraced the cause for protecting the environment. And they can do that with beauty and style with excellent products like Human Nature that feel good on your skin as they do in your heart! We have a lot more updates in this month's newsletter so please read on and be informed! Best wishes, ![]() Anna Meloto-Wilk President Gandang Kalikasan Inc. P.S. Human Nature Global Ambassador Rachel Grant Judges Miss Earth 2010 It was a glamorous privilege to travel to Vietnam as a judge for Miss Earth 2010 international pageant held recently in Vinpearl island resort in Nha Trang. As a former beauty queen, I was enthused with the thought of sitting back, relaxing and enjoying such a colourful and entertaining affair. I have taken part in 4 international pageants representing both the Philippines and Great Britain, so I found it riveting, as well as a little tense finding myself sitting on the other side of table. I know too well the nerves, the effort, the time devoted to preparing for a pageant and the accompanying expectations, love and hope for one's country to do well. After perusing over my explanatory score sheets and contestant information, I soon realized my task at hand was much harder than that of a beauty queen! ![]() This was my first time to Vietnam and the 35th country I was to visit in my life. It was fabulous to see such a joyous and peaceful occasion being held in Nha Trang, once home to the toughest air force military training school of the 20th century. Nha Trang is now known for its pristine beaches, superb mud baths and hot spas, old temples, great seafood, and has the world's longest cable car over water - all of which I gratefully experienced during my visit, courtesy of Miss Earth. The 90 contestants had been in Vietnam preparing and touring for almost one month. Judging the pageant took just two days. It included a whole day of preliminary scoring behind closed doors, then a dazzling evening with all members of the jury attending the final theatrical extravaganza watched by over 80 million households. ![]() The judging process and percentages were scored in two parts with beauty of face and body at 55% and quality of interview, along with character at 45%. It was far from an easy task judging how aesthetically attractive one appears and poise, graciousness and elegance of the candidate became the deciding factor with marking grades. The interview portion proved unexpectedly fascinating and shocking at times, with many showing remarkable social skills and an ability to answer challenging questions on the environmental state of their respective countries and global topics as well as dealing with the odd quirky question. In many parts of the world, pageants are seen as out-of-date and superficial but I have always found them valuable and profound experiences. Miss Earth is the epitome of pageants. It completely focuses on all the good and charitable deeds you would expect to see from a celebration of beautiful women. Miss Earth's 90 candidates and winners actively promote and get involved in the preservation of the environment and the protection of our planet. Many are very passionate and go on to serve as UNICEF ambassadors or continue with environmental pursuits for years. It is reassuring to know that there are many determined young ladies out there with projects at work and who are helping to educate their communities and others. ![]() Human Nature is pleased to have introduced their products to beautiful Miss Earth candidates who understand clearly the benefits of choosing to use chemical free cosmetics. Human Nature is setting a wonderful standard of world class, unharmful, environmentally-friendly products, where no animals need to be harmed and no essential natural resources need to be depleted. Using Human Nature products can only aid in helping repair the damage our planet Earth has incurred. It is one significant simple gesture and contribution we can give back to our world. Miss Earth taught me that beauty is not skin deep - it is from the heart, and it begins with loving and being humane to our Mother Earth. HEAD OFFICE UPDATES ![]() ![]() ![]() Human Nature Head Office Strategic Planning in GK Enchanted Farm ![]() 2011 started off fresh and filled with excitement for the Human Nature family. First agenda on our list: Strategic Planning. 2010 was definitely a good year for us. We raised Php973,000 for our One Heart for One Community campaign and had our first ever Human Nature Summit, among other things. 2010 was definitely a year where we were "blessed to be stressed". ☺ This year, to kick things off, we decided to start by setting some BIG goals in bringing better quality of life to Filipinos, from our farmers to dealers to end-users. Human Nature's strategic planning session was held at the GK Enchanted Farm in Angat, Bulacan. The air was fresh, the sun was shining and it was like standing in a little piece of heaven, surrounded by abundant crops and happy farmers. This was a vision of what every province can look like if we can make our country's farms productive and our farmers prosperous. The perfect place to gather all our thoughts and align our ideas to better serve you and them. For those of you who don't know, GK Enchanted Farm is a "village university" in Angat, Bulacan where Human Nature's pilot farm is located. It's a place where social entrepreneurs showcase their businesses, incubate their ideas and a place where people can go to relax and be one with nature, from the aviary to the heart-shaped swimming pool to the fields of swaying crops and fragrant flowers. Human Nature had the privilege to be the first to hold their company strategic planning session there. If you too are looking for a place to have your company team building or even kids' birthday parties with explorer themes, you may contact Frank Chiu at 09175457225. So what are our goals for this year? Well some of them you'll find out as the year goes on. But the most difficult to achieve and the one we are taking most seriously is that we plan to give P10m to develop farming communities among the poor in the Philippines in 2011. That's more than the entire profit we made for 2010... but with God's grace and your help, we will do it! It's going to be a busy year! DANGEROUS CHEMICALS 101: NANOPARTICLES Inhale, exhale, inhale, ex *cough cough* We all know the air in Manila is NOT clean at all, especially the roads where jeeps and buses are rampant. So why put even more in our cosmetics? What are we talking about? Well, we're talking about nanoparticles. Lately, they seem to just be everywhere, including our everyday cosmetics. Nanoparticles started with sunscreens. Iron oxide and titanium dioxide have powerful UV ray-blocking capabilities but conventional iron oxide and titanium dioxide always left a white coating on the skin. Who wants to look like a ghost on the beach? Not me! Nor you probably. That's why the sun block industry created ultra tiny versions of those ingredients so that the sunscreen would be transparent. Bye bye Casper. Nanoparticles are VERY TINY particles that are 1/5,000th the thickness of a sheet of paper. Today, they're included in the formulation of many everyday cosmetics, helping to glide over the skin to produce that smooth, glow-like finish that feels light on your skin. Sounds great, right? Well, it's not so great. According to Dr. Samuel Epstein, MD, Chairman of the Cancer Prevention Coalition, skin absorption or inhalation of cosmetics containing nanoparticles could cause the particles to accumulate in the body and produce toxic effects. Lung damage is the chief human toxicity concern surrounding nanotechnology, with studies showing that most nanoparticles migrate to the lungs. However, there are also worries over the potential for damage to other organs. Good thing though with Love Minerals by Human Nature, you don't have to worry about nanoparticles and their toxic effects because we have none of them in our products. We stay true to our word and that is to bring you only the good! ![]() DEALER OF THE MONTH: Maxine Monasterio ![]() One-on-one with Ms. Maxine Ysabel Monasterio, Human Nature Ambassador for Cagayan De Oro How did you find out about Human Nature? It was the summer of 2010 when I started the hunt for the perfect make-up remover. At that time I was busy with my internship and with my job as a host for a local show for ABS-CBN; both of which include the need to wear make-up. So I started trying different make-up removers, but all the products I tried either left my skin all red and dry or itchy. I was just about to settle with the "red and dry" until one of the teachers where I was taking my internship showed me a catalogue of Human Nature. I ordered the Honey and Cocoa Butter Cleanser and Make-Up Remover and fell in love with the product right after my first use. Have you always been into natural and organic products? I give all the credit to Human Nature for starting my love for organic products. Before I was introduced to the brand, I wouldn't even consider buying organics because those found in the market are so expensive. I think this is the reason why I immediately loved the brand. And what made me love it even more was its advocacy. As I started reading articles about Human Nature, I found out that it is pro-poor because it sources its raw materials from GK farms, pro-environment because they make sure that every step in the process of making their products leaves no harmful effect on the environment and pro-Philippines because it's 100% Filipino made. Now if all that won't make you love the product, I don't know what will. ![]() What are your favorite Human Nature products? My favorite products would be the honey and cocoa cleanser and the guava hand and body lotion. I love the cleanser because it really does its job. It can remove even the most stubborn make-up plus it doesn't leave my skin irritated. The lotion is also really, really good. I LOVE the sweet smell it leaves on my skin and it doesn't leave my skin feeling sticky. What keeps you busy now? I'm a 4th year student now so I'm graduating a month from now. Aside from my studies, it's my hosting and my ties with the DENR that keep me busy. One of the things I really admire about Human Nature is its environmental advocacy which is something that I relate to. Since 2007 I have been working closely with the DENR as their youth spokesperson here in Mindanao. Basically what I do is try to spread environmental awareness to the youth and inspire them to become environmental ambassadors as well. I went on school tours to talk about environmental issues, gave talks in youth camps and participated in environmental events such as the Earth Day celebration, International Coastal Clean-up, Youth for Environment Summer Camp and the Earth Hour to name a few.
