MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Friends,

Just recently, my skin has gone overly dry and irritated due to pollen allergies which I contracted while visiting family in the States. My only relief came from the Sunflower Beauty Oil which I gingerly applied to the troubled skin surrounding my eyes. Just overnight, the redness and the swelling subsided. Being a true blue island girl, I am just so glad to be back in our tropical country again! I never thought I'd say this but, thank you Lord for the humidity! :) Speaking of the tropics, we are smack in the middle of summer and as temperatures rise I hope you are well prepared to nourish and protect yourself from the harsh elements! Here is my summer must have list:
  1. Human Nature All Natural Deodorant in a super yummy, fruity new scent - no aluminum salts so no cancer-worries!
  2. Cotton sleeveless tops
  3. Human Nature Strengthening Conditioner with Peppermint for a fresh, tingly feeling in my scalp and awesomely moisturized locks
  4. Ouchless black elastic band to keep my hair in place and out of my neck
  5. My Jacinto & Lirio bag made from dried water hyacinths. This eco-friendly, ethical and super cool bag is made by another social enterprise started by Ateneo students (check out www.jacintoandlirio.com).
  6. A nice cold bottle of Enchantea - a true brew fusion tea made of pandan, lemongrass and duhat all grown, harvested and concocted in GK Enchanted Farm in Bulacan. Available at the Human Nature head office and the GK Enchanted Farm.
  7. Human Nature Tinted Lip Balm in Island Kiss (especially made for island girls like you and me!)
Check out the latest news from Human Nature this May.

Until next month!

Our R&D team have been trying for months to create red without using carmine (that horrible pigment made from crushed insects that most lipsticks use). ADVOCACY UPDATES

A. Making Business Sense: Providing the Best for the Least

The hard economic times and competitive business environment makes every Filipino entrepreneur nervous about their profitability. Operations and strategies must be carefully analyzed as increasing food and fuel costs trigger an increase in pretty much everything else and an endless debate on how to fix the economy. Such is a reality for most business owners, where the opportunity to grow and provide is confronted by issues concerning shrinking profits and sustainability.

Armed with foresight and an exceptional appetite for risks, a growing wave of social entrepreneurs are determined to take the challenge of proving that business is capable of rising beyond this fear with the intent of creating an opportunity for a better life for all.

B. Bayani Challenge

Now on its 6th year, GK Bayani Challenge 2011 was held last April 4-9 in Bantayan Island, Cebu. While most people kicked off the summer basking on the beach, 1,700 volunteers opted to brave the heat to take part in nation building. This year's Bayani Challenge was more exciting since it did not only include building houses, but also farm building, school refurbishing, island greening, mangrove planting, paraisong pambata and health mission, all happening at the same time in three municipalities: Sta. Fe, Bantayan and Madridejos. Team Human Nature, composed of 21 members from different departments, warehouse staff and branch operators, was one of 100 teams from various corporate, local and international groups who helped transform the island.

C. CommPassion

Our plans to build a modern passion fruit processing plant for the community of GK Catigan, Davao are being finalized with help from other partners who are generously sharing themselves to lift the whole community out of poverty. Remember, all profits from our Passion Fruit Mineral Hydrating Lipstick will go to Catigan until the plant is fully funded. DOST is validating our extraction processes and linking us with more cost efficient extractor producers. Team GK Davao is partnering with University of Southern Mindanao for initial test extractions and eventual training for our GK Kapitbahayan. Soil testing has been conducted to assure the quality of our crops where 2 hectares of Passion fruit trees are already established. As more and more partners are coming in, GK and Human Nature are also studying an expansion of 8 hectares where bright sunny sunflowers will bloom. Stay tuned for more updates and keep promoting the lipsticks! We hope that in just another 3-4 months, the entire project will be fully funded and another community of Filipino farmers will rise from poverty to world-class excellence, thanks to your help

DANGEROUS CHEMICALS 101: DEET

Move over bugs, there's a new sheriff in town! It's a mean, (apple) green, DEET-FREE machine that's sure to keep you and your loved ones safe from dengue and other side effects caused by harmful chemicals such as DEET.

Human Nature's much loved Bug Spray has done a lot of good in this country. It has undoubtedly saved some of you from dengue. It has produced livelihood for a whole community in Labo, Camarines Norte. And on top of that, it has protected all of you from DEET!

DEET (chemical name, N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide) was developed by the United States Army for military use following their experience of jungle warfare in World War II. It was originally tested as a pesticide on farm fields. Imagine that! The Duke University Medical Center has concluded through laboratory rat studies that long-term use of DEET kills brain neurons thus affecting the central nervous system of both humans and animals. Research from the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry from Atlanta, Georgia has shown that DEET can act as an irritant, may cause skin reactions and has even been linked to birth defect if used excessively or over a long period of time. On top of which, the US EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) website even lists cases of children dying, directly as a result of exposure to DEET. This toxic chemical was intended to protect soldiers on short-term tours of duty, not for long-term, daily use such as we need here in the Philippines almost every day of our lives.

The good news is that our 100% natural citronella insect repellent made with citronella, lemongrass and lavender essential oils effectively protects you from disease-causing mosquitoes and pesky bugs without the nasty effects of toxic chemicals.

Why risk dengue? And why risk DEET? Protect your family with Only the Good.

DEALER OF THE MONTH: Ehda Dagooc (Mandaue Branch)

Having tried natural and organic products before, Ehda was familiar with the benefits of going natural but because of the steep price she had to pay for the international natural/organic brands, she wasn't able to use them consistently. That's why she was so grateful when Human Nature was introduced to her because finally, for the first time, there was a Filipino product that was not only of great quality but was affordable for everyone too! Because of this excitement, Ehda chose to use her daytime job as a journalist for the Freeman, a top local publication in Cebu, and Philstar online to spread the word to the mainstream people about Human Nature and our advocacy.

Having been a Human Nature dealer since March 2010, Ehda has been a very active and supportive dealer having written about Human Nature in several of her columns in The Freeman and Philstar online. When asked what it is she likes about Human Nature that has her writing and raving about it, she replied, "There are a lot of things I learned from being an HN dealer. I cannot afford to keep it to myself and within circle of friends and family. So, by writing some vital information for the mainstream customers I believe I could somehow help them understand how the creation of Human Nature products help one to take care of herself without emptying her wallet, help a farmer, and even help a homeless family (through Gawad Kalinga )...and most of all helping promote the Philippines to become a world-class manufacturer of Organic products in the world."

Having signed up initially to get the discounts for herself, Ehda has gone past that. She shares, "The company's thrust in not just providing the best quality organic products to people, so as not to harm their body, but also in helping the farmers improve their lifestyle always melts my heart. I could see the heart of the company, in helping the farmers not just for a "show" but in all its sincerity." And after listening to a talk on social entrepreneurship given by our very own VP, Dylan Wilk, she has then gone on to share her story of her love with Human Nature and convinced others to sign up as dealers and be part of the Human Nature family. Even her kids, she said, are helping to promote Human Nature products to friends.

So, from the bottom of our hearts we say, thank you Ehda for helping other Filipinos learn more about Human Nature. Continue on with the good work.
