MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Friends,

The road to Labo, Camarines Norte was long, at times narrow and crooked but despite the discomfort of travelling for 6 hours to our Citronella farming community, our little group from Human Nature head office was very excited. Last August 8, Monday, marked the culmination of our One Heart for One Community campaign in Brgy. Canapawan, Labo, Camarines Norte. Through the tireless efforts of the KMMBK (the Citronella Farmers' Cooperative), PFEC (our community and technology partner NGO, GK Bicol and the Social Enterprise Department of Human Nature, we inaugurated the newly built integrated drying and extraction facility for the Citronella Oil, the new KMMBK head office, the bridge and partial road system to the production site, the three renovated school buildings with brand new roofing and turned over new textbooks to the elementary school pupils. It was an inspiring day that started at 430 am when we arrived in Brgy. Canapawan from Manila. We were told that the community members, PFEC and the advance team of Human Nature had been working through the night just to get all the finishing touches done in time for the inauguration in true bayanihan style. We visited the production area which was a 1.2 km trek up the mountain close to a sustainable natural mineral water source and we marvelled at what this little community has accomplished in just less than 6 months since we started work. PFEC and the farmers proudly toured us around the facility and demonstrated how it can greatly improve their oil productivity and efficiency resulting in more income for the farmers. The elemantary school no longer has to cancel classes everytime it rains because water will no longer be leaking through the ceiling making it impossible for pupils to concentrate. The students no longer have to share workbooks and erase their answers so that another pupil can have a turn at answering the activities. We were truly inspired to see how the collaborative approach with the community has resulted in relevant investments and services that has greatly improved the quality of life for this almost forgotten barangay. But not only does the community benefit but also and Human Nature and our customers who can now be assured of a better supply of truly organic and effective products at reasonable prices.

This is only the beginning of what we can achieve. As we, the farmers, customers, partner NGOs, branches, staff and dealers unite towards the same goal, we can replicate what we have done in Brgy. Canapawan into many more sites all over the Philippines secure a better future for all Filipinos especially the poor.

We are all honored to share this journey with you.

In the service of God and country,

Anna Meloto-Wilk
President

III. Dangerous Chemicals 101: Synthetic Fragrance

"Oooohhh... bango!" That's usually the first thing we hear out of a Filipino's mouth when it comes to buying anything especially shampoo. You'll find that instead of reading the label, they'll most likely be sniffing an open bottle on the hunt for the best and strongest scent out there. For some reason, we Filipinos like when our hair smells of citrus, flowers and other sumptuous scents all day long; from the time we step out of shower until the time we go to bed. But did you know that the synthetic ingredients used to create such long-lasting scents are actually harmful to your health?

Synthetic fragrances are primarily made from petrochemicals and attempt to duplicate the smell of a specific plant, and as found in a 1986 report by the National Academy of Sciences, 95% of the chemicals used in synthetic fragrances are derived from petroleum and include benzene derivatives, aldehydes and many other known toxins and synthesizers capable of causing cancer, birth defects, central nervous system disorders and allergic reactions including asthma.

Good thing Human Nature's new KIDS SHAMPOO & BODY WASH with Protein Care System contain NONE of that. Instead, we've opted for the natural alternative, natural fragrances. With all natural fragrances, the scent may not last as long as chemical scents but wouldn't you rather be assured that your kids stay safe from all the harmful effects of synthetic fragrances? Why risk asthma, allergies and in later life, cancer? So, before you grab that bottle of sweet smelling shampoo, think about the risks and most importantly, READ THE LABEL!

IV. Community Development

A. Inauguration of One Heart for One Community Project

It has been almost six months since we signed the Memorandum of Agreement with Kooperatiba ng Maliliit na Magniniyog ng Brgy. Kanapawan (KMMBK), Philippine Federation for Environmental Concern (PFEC) and Gawad Kalinga (GK) implementing the One Heart for One Community (OHOC) Program which turned over 100% of our profits from our number one selling product, the Citronella Bug Spray, as an investment fund for our farming community engagements. This may be uncommon for companies to pursue, but our leap of faith has resulted in productivity investments (repair and installation of additional extractors, construction of drying hall, water system and road network) and community development projects (textbooks for and renovation of Kanapawan Elementary School, construction of KMMBK office, provision of Philhealth and Red Cross insurances) that will enable the citronella farmers of Kanapawan to scale up their production and inspire the rest of their community to work together for their needs.

V. Dealer of the Month: Melissa Ayala

A true Human Nature advocate, Melissa (Missy) Ayala practices being Pro-Philippines, Pro-Poor and Pro-Environment with her husband and educates herself and her family in adopting good habits -from the products that they use to what they eat and drink.

Missy first found out about Human Nature when she attended the Gawad Kalinga CSI Launch in Ateneo where our Vice President, Dylan Wilk, spoke of his vision for social enterprises. From that moment on, she was hooked! When asked what urged her to sign up to become a dealer, she said, "I loved the idea of a product that is good for you, good for the environment and good for the country! It doesn't get any better than that!" Missy loves Human Nature so much that she even has an area in her guest room just off their living area, the most accessible room in their house, which boasts Human Nature products! She states, "My home is a kind of "Grand Central Station" these days so people are welcome to come and shop!"

Selling Human Nature products was not that big of an issue for Missy. Because of the integrity and quality of the products she says, she was able to sell them easily to family and friends. Once they had given the products a try, the products pretty much sold themselves. The first dealer she got to sign up under her was her sister who is now the Human Nature Boston-area distributor. Now, her mom and sister who are in Dallas are also interested in becoming the Human Nature distributors in their area. See, Human Nature truly is world-class!

Some of Missy's favourite Human Nature products include the all-natural deodorant, the sunflower beauty oil, citrus burst spray sanitizer and the eucalyptus massage oil.
