Message from the President ![]() How time flies! We're now on the last few months of 2011 and Christmas is just around the corner. There have been several milestones this year -- exciting new products such as our groundbreaking line of natural shampoos with CreamFoam® technology, the opening of 4 new branches and our dealer base nearing the 20,000 mark! We've also received recognition from local and international groups such as the PETA certification for being animal-cruelty free, official nomination to the APEC Women and the Economy Summit for innovations in entrepreneurship and finally the Ernst & Young Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award for 2011. Human Nature has also been at the cutting edge of technology using it to advance our advocacies with the launch of the "Read the Label" app (Apple and Android) and education campaign. We believe that these achievements are signs of the times that the Filipino consumer is now purchasing products based on values and love for country. We no longer just buy our favorite brands because of loyalty or price but because of integrity and social responsibility. We encourage everyone to attend our 2011 Human Nature Dealer Summit at the GK Enchanted Farm on November 19, Saturday. This year's theme is Humanity Fair: Hearts of Change and in it we hope to share with everyone our vision of a prosperous Philippines through the blossoming of thousands of patriotic businesses. We hope that you will continue to support all patriotic businesses, not just Human Nature, who are working towards providing quality of life to every Filipino. We encourage you all to read and share this month's newsletter for more exciting updates and upcoming products that can help you have achieve a Pro-Philippines, Pro-Poor and Pro-Environment lifestyle. Human Nature Awarded Ernst & Young Social Entrepreneur of the Year 2011 ![]() Dangerous Chemicals 101 Read the Label! Think about it, what are some things that you would avoid yourself and also have your kids avoid? An obvious one that comes to mind is cigarettes. See, cigarettes contain nicotine and when smoked on a prolonged basis, may lead to lung cancer. But would you ever imagine that hand sanitizers and other everyday products could contain chemicals which are almost as harmful? You wouldn't let your children smoke, but you might be giving them products which are almost as harmful every day! Puzzled? Well, let us enlighten you. Nicotine is a high risk ingredient. On EWG's Skin Deep website (www.ewg.org/skindeep) it has a hazard rating of 8 out of 10. EWG is the largest and most comprehensive database on personal care ingredients in the world. It backs up all its ratings with the names of the scientific studies which led to those ratings. All the studies are put together by independent scientists, and are culled from more than 50 standard toxicity and regulatory databases. There is no vested interest in it. So nicotine is an 8. Now let's move on to Triclosan. Triclosan can be found in many hand sanitizers and hand soap and is also considered a high risk ingredient. It's only one notch lower than nicotine - 7 out of 10. But do we see warnings about this before buying those products off the shelf? No. The FDA does not ban all harmful ingredients or products (like cigarettes). The way the government and FDA protect us is by making sure that all the ingredients are listed on the label. As consumers, we need to know what those ingredients are in order to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe. Well, thanks to our Read The Label app and www.readthelabel.ph website (with content courtesy of EWG), now there's a way for you to do it! Simply go to the dictionary on the app or on the website, type in the ingredient and hey presto! It tells you instantly whether it's safe or may not be. So don't forget to read the label and be wary of what you use on yourself. You never know, that mineral oil filled lotion that you're lathering on could be clogging your pores and speeding up ageing (it almost certainly is!). Go ahead, download, search and seek the answers to your questions and remember, before buying, READ THE LABEL. |
