Message from Anna Dear Friends, Recently, a sudden announcement of a massive transport strike resulted in the cancellation of classes for our kids. Although this was met by our kids with delight at the prospect of a free day to play, to most of us this meant greater difficulty in getting to work and lost hours of learning for students. At the root of the problem though were the escalating prices of gasoline that drove bus operators to demand for a fare increase. Gasoline and other petroleum products are limited, a non-renewable resource, and unless we wean ourselves from our oil dependence, the prices will always go up and cause more suffering to all - especially the poor. Here at Human Nature, we ban all petroleum-based raw materials (such as mineral oil) in all our products as well as dangerous heavy metals like aluminum compounds that are not just harmful to our health, they are also toxic when released into the environment. Coincidentally, the new Dr. Seuss movie opened on the day of the strike so I took my girls to see "The Lorax". I was pleasantly surprised to find that the movie was about the effects of corporate greed, a push for sustainability and in simple terms, about helping kids understand that CARING is the start of the solution. Because as the Lorax said, "UNLESS, someone cares a whole awful lot, nothing will change, no they will not!" Human Nature opened its flagship store - a beautiful, unique and truly amazing Filipino concept store; a first of its kind located on this side of town. Human Nature President and co-founder Anna Meloto-Wilk welcomed guests and talked about her love for Quezon City - a city very close to her heart, a city where her family has been residing for the past 26 years, a city where the Human Nature Filipino concept store now stands, ready to showcase world-class Filipino products. Father and Founder of Gawad Kalinga, Tony Meloto was also there to inspire others. He talked about how young Filipino talent will help fulfill the Philippines' destiny to become the 16th biggest economy in the world and how the Philippines is now the gateway to Asia. Bayani Challenge 2012 Dear Bayani, Every year since 2006, Gawad Kalinga has staged the GK Bayani Challenge, a 5-day test of courage, endurance and love for country. Teams of 15 people go on an adventure to plant hope on ground by building communities and fostering friendships that are critical to nation-building. Human Nature has been a part of this movement and extreme summer challenge for 2 years now and we'd like you, yes YOU, to join our team this year! The urgent call of building this nation will be answered once again this April 9-14. This year's Bayani Challenge will gather volunteers not only in one but in FIVE provinces around the country. "PILIPINAS, NGAYON NA!" will challenge more volunteers to change lives, bring hope to others, and build sustainable communities in Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Masbate, Mindoro Occidental and two areas in Negros Oriental (Dumaguete and Amlan). Paraisong Pambata Create an environment of fun and learning for children aged 6 to 10 years old through feeding programs, story-telling sessions, games, and a Sports Clinic. School Build Make public schools conducive to learning by refurbishing rooms, painting walls, landscaping gardens, and repairing tables and chairs. Environment Be a hero for the environment by planting trees and organizing clean-up drives. Community Health Share the importance of health by conducting a nutrition program, medical check-ups and health consultations among the different barangays. In line with our advocacy, Human Nature will participate in the Environment cleanup/tree-planting activity.
