Message from Anna Dear Friends, The May showers started bang on the dot on the first day of this merry month signaling the end of the sweltering summer. Like most people, I welcomed the change not just because the heat was starting to become unbearable but for the sake of our little garden. Early this year, I made it one of my goals to start a garden in our house for my husband and my kids. I have lived in the city all my life and any form of greenery is hard to come by but I felt strongly about surrounding my family with nature. We live in a small house and our garden is only about 10sqm but that little patch of land has become a source of joy and learning for our family. It's so much easier to teach our kids how to love the earth when they can see and appreciate it everyday. They learn about how things grow and that bugs and worms are important because God has a special purpose for them. The blue grass is thriving beautifully now but it took many, many weeks of frustration and disappointment before we learned how to make things grow in our concrete jungle. At some point it was hard to see how the muddy mess in our front yard could ever become the paradise that I had imagined. It reminded me of the many challenges that we encountered in building up Human Nature. Just like our garden, we just had a vision of how business can make society beautiful but how to get from where we were to where we want to be was a mystery. In many ways, it still is. But just as we trust the showers to come in May, we rely on God to nourish and sustain us every step of the way. ![]() So surround yourselves with things that grow, even if it's just a little potted cactus on your window sill. You'll be amazed at how that little living thing can inspire you to do more or do things differently in your life. With enough conviction and creativity, maybe one day we might just find ourselves in the midst of paradise again. With hopeful resolve, ![]() Anna Meloto-Wilk President Gandang Kalikasan Inc. While I was there, I became a frequent watcher of the Food Network channel and really got into food and cooking. Thinking about a food business then became a natural progression for me even though I had no background in food (my background is in computer science and at the time was actually working in the IT industry). The inspiration came with this new shop in Pittsburgh that sold gourmet chocolates from around the world. There was a trend for what they would call "single origin" chocolates, which meant that the cacao bean used to make the chocolate came from only one region or country- much like with wine. It piqued my interest and in my research I learned that only tropical countries within 20 degrees of the equator, like the Philippines, can grow cacao. So even though we thought European chocolates are the best, the raw materials come from countries just like ours. So that got me to thinking of doing single origin Philippine chocolates since nobody had it at the time. It was then that I decided to come home to pursue this. ![]() Dangerous Chemicals 101: Feel Modifiers ![]() ![]() So we're all used to that soft, smooth, silky feel. You know, the one you feel when slathering on a luxurious hand and body cream or using the latest cosmetics breakthrough product that promises a youthful, flawless look. But do you know where all the silky soft smoothness comes from? FEEL MODIFIERS. While the word 'feel modifiers' may not sound scary, it's actually the meaning of it that is. Feel modifiers is a term used for petroleum by-product ingredients usually ending in " - one" like silicone, dimethicone, etc., and are used in most cosmetics products, leave-on skin care and hair care products as well as other personal care products to make a surface feel soft, smooth and silky. But did you know that they're also used in the same stuff that runs your car? Yeah, great, huh? Not. ![]() |
