Message from Anna Dear Friends, It's been seven years since I embarked on this adventure of more conscientious living sparked by motherhood and encouraged by my husband who has always been mindful about the food that he eats and the stuff (less instead of more!) that he surrounds himself with. It hasn't been an easy journey, mind you - the road to a more sustainable lifestyle has been fraught with tears (while cleaning re-usable diapers), sleepless nights (from breastfeeding) and limited choices (because green products were just not available when we started). But the sacrifices have been worth it - looking at my kids now and even my own personal quality of life , I can honestly say that we are reaping the benefits of health and just an over-all sense of well-being. I hope that through Human Nature, we are able to make it easier for more people to make choices that are gentler to the environment and that positively impact communities. Indeed, this September has been filled with a powerful affirmation of Human Nature's commitment to doing good while doing well: just last week, Human Nature was recognized as one of 26 Global Social Entrepreneurs of 2012 by the Schwab Foundation. This month also marked the launch of the beautiful, world-class Human Nature concept stores in Olongapo and Cagayan de Oro, and yet another one in Iloilo this coming weekend. It seems like a blink of an eye since the first concept store after our Flagship Store opened in Laguna! In the coming months, we eagerly look forward to witnessing the unveiling of more of these inspiring testaments to why now is truly the best time to be a Filipino. As we continue to be faithful stewards of our talents and natural resources, giving our utmost in building our country, the poor, and the environment, I am convinced that God will generously honor our faith. Uplifted and grateful, ![]() New Products
Human Nature Receives the Schwab Foundation 2012 GLOBAL SOCIAL ENTREPRENEUR AWARD ![]() Last week, Human Nature Founders Anna Meloto-Wilk and Dylan Wilk were recognized by the Schwab Foundation as one of twenty-six Global Social Entrepreneur Awardees for 2012 - an inspiring affirmation of the impact of social innovation on a worldwide scale. Indeed, there's no business like social business. Dylan Wilk said, "Human Nature has shown that loving the country works, doing the right thing works, employing the poor and paying our people more works. (In order to be competitive), we need to find other efficiencies in our business; we need to be creative because we pay our people more than what other business do and THAT is what makes us better." ![]() The bottom line remains: The key to progress is LOVE. Not only must we love our country with our minds, hearts and our pockets, but also with our commitment to finding innovative ways to make our businesses serve the people and lift our country out of poverty. "Now, more than ever, business should be at the forefront of addressing social and environmental issues because it has the resources, technology and discipline to make a significant impact. All it needs is the heart and the will to do so," said Anna Meloto-Wilk. And in Human Nature, we are blessed with the abundance of hearts and wills! You, our dedicated dealers, our passionate partners, our bold and brave branch operators, our family of advocates who champion the poor, the environment, and the Philippines daily, YOU have made us what we are now - AN EXTRAORDINARY ENTERPRISE - and we are honored to build this nation with you. ![]() In the Business of Leaving No One Behind By: Mike Go Social Enterprise Development (SED) Head - Human Nature ![]() The story of contractual labor is a sad reality which is easily dismissed as a business necessity in our society. Most have accepted this practice for various justifications based on productivity, efficiency or practicality. Whether in top corporations or educational institutions whose auxiliary services are most likely run by contractuals, the business dogma of Lower Costs, Minimize Expenses, Increase Margins and Maximize Shareholders' Interests leave little insight to the true value of our labor force in economic development. ![]() As arguments over minimum wage and labor relations persist annually, responsibility is usually passed around on who is supposed to solve this pervasive issue. Business leaders and consumers seem content that corporate social responsibility programs, public relation campaigns and outreach events are sufficient to compensate the matter. Despite this situation of doubt and hopelessness, social enterprises see a ripe opportunity to push for critical social change. ![]() HEROES WANTED: Human Nature is Hiring! ![]() Have you ever wanted to be a superhero? Just present a valid ID at the front desk Learning to Love the Countryside By: Thomas Graham Volunteer Writer of Gawad Kalinga ![]() As I perused the flyer for the GK Countryside Fair last weekend, I couldn't help but be curious. Drawn to the slogan "Eat, Shop, Help End Poverty", it appeared to offer me the chance to do two of my favourite things (eating and shopping), and yet this time not have to feel guilty about it - after all, it would be for a good cause! Certainly, anything arranged by GK was likely to be a far cry from the typical countryside fairs I had grown up with back in the UK, where old age pensioners and cake baking competitions tend to dominate proceedings. This was a countryside fair with a difference - the chance to show us city folk the magic of the Filipino countryside, as well as the vast potential it holds to bring this nation out of poverty. ![]() 2012 Human Nature Summit - You're Invited! ![]() Thinking of getting away from the city even just for a day to refresh, rejuvenate and surround yourself with like-minded individuals who share the same passion for natural & organic products and lifting the nation out of poverty? Well, mark that calendar because we're cooking up something big for you guys on November 10. Come join us as we launch the Christmas Edition of our magalogue, unveil a whole new category of products (that's good not only for you, but for different communities too) and celebrate 4 years of all-natural goodness! It'll be a day full of fun for you and your families so don't miss it! Human Nature Branch Makeover Series: New Site, New Look! CDO & Olongapo Branches - now open! It's now nine months along the year, and you've witnessed developments happening with Human Nature. One of these developments is moving to a better location and giving you a more convenient shopping experience. We want Human Nature to truly be the brand of choice of Filipinos, which is why our products are formulated perfectly for the Filipino skin and why our stores are designed to welcome you like a home. Following the lead of our Flagship Store, the San Pablo, Laguna and Cebu City branches have also given their Human Nature homes a makeover. So whose branch is it this time? (Drum roll please!) Following suit in this national makeover series are Olongapo and Cagayan de Oro Branches! ![]() For two years, our Olongapo branch quietly sat along East Tapinac. You won't find Human Nature along Rizal Ave., Olongapo anymore. That shouldn't come as bad news, 'cause their new brand new location is impossible to miss! They have moved to Manila Ave. corner Dewey Ave., in Olongapo's ever-popular shopping district - in the Subic Bay Freeport Zone. Not only is this branch more accessible, but this branch is now sporting a brand new look. Why don't you bring your friends and family along to this new home? ![]() ![]() With a little green nook for your kids to be preoccupied while you peacefully do your shopping, Human Nature Olongapo is surely a family destination. Now also serving coffee in a little waiting area, it is now easy to make shopping for natural goodies a family activity. We are inspired by Olongapo's hard work and persistence - and the brand new store reflects a graceful transformation from its humble beginnings. ![]() Want to read more about Olongapo's story? ![]() Next up: Cagayan de Oro branch! ![]() Possibly just as thrilling as ziplining and white water rafting, CDO is known for is the Human Nature CDO move and visual overhaul. Here's an interesting tidbit - CDO's new branch is actually one of the oldest buildings and a heritage site in the city! Preserving its historical facade, the store lets you experience the merry mix of the old and the new as Cagayan de Oro welcomes its loyal shoppers with our trademark modern Philippine look. This branch, also brandishing canopies, will be easy to spot since it sits in the corner of CDO City's two busiest streets - Hayes and Velez. ![]() Unlike the old branch that used to be on the second floor, the new branch is now accessible even to Persons With Disabilities (PWDs). The branch operators intently looked for a location that will be convenient for everyone to access. ![]() Through humble beginnings and infinite possibilities, advocates like you have remained loyal to us. These transformations are our way of giving back. We'd be very happy to welcome you home! ![]() Want to read more about CDO's story? ![]() Visit these branches here: Human Nature Olongapo Branch Manila Ave.cor Dewey Ave. CBD, Subic Bay Freeport Zone Olongapo City Tel. The Enchanted Farm, with all its attractions, is also an ecosystem for sustainable business ventures that help the poor. The entrepreneurs saw the magic in duck eggs and meat and decided to use this as a tool to put the Philippines on the map through developing a brand that is built on creating excellent products and generating social impact. Hence, 100 ducks later, the Golden Egg was laid and the social enterprise was born. The Golden Egg is a salted duck egg. However, unlike the regular salted duck eggs in the market which are colored red, the Golden Egg uses a food-grade turmeric coloring. This sets it apart as it is also our mark of quality. The color represents the values hinged on every egg that is produced. Moreover, it is our way of educating our consumers, shouting out to them that natural products can have social effects too. What also adds value to this special product is the fact that there is only half the salt content found in the regular salted egg thus making the eggs easier to eat and fun to mix with different dishes or prepare unique dishes entriely such as salads, brushcettas, deviled eggs or even simple pandesal with Golden Eggs.
