Dear Friends,
It's been seven years since I embarked on this adventure of more conscientious living sparked by motherhood and encouraged by my husband who has always been mindful about the food that he eats and the stuff (less instead of more!) that he surrounds himself with. It hasn't been an easy journey, mind you - the road to a more sustainable lifestyle has been fraught with tears (while cleaning re-usable diapers), sleepless nights (from breastfeeding) and limited choices (because green products were just not available when we started). But the sacrifices have been worth it - looking at my kids now and even my own personal quality of life , I can honestly say that we are reaping the benefits of health and just an over-all sense of well-being. I hope that through Human Nature, we are able to make it easier for more people to make choices that are gentler to the environment and that positively impact communities.
Indeed, this September has been filled with a powerful affirmation of Human Nature's commitment to doing good while doing well: just last week, Human Nature was recognized as one of 26 Global Social Entrepreneurs of 2012 by the Schwab Foundation. This month also marked the launch of the beautiful, world-class Human Nature concept stores in Olongapo and Cagayan de Oro, and yet another one in Iloilo this coming weekend. It seems like a blink of an eye since the first concept store after our Flagship Store opened in Laguna! In the coming months, we eagerly look forward to witnessing the unveiling of more of these inspiring testaments to why now is truly the best time to be a Filipino. As we continue to be faithful stewards of our talents and natural resources, giving our utmost in building our country, the poor, and the environment, I am convinced that God will generously honor our faith.

As I perused the flyer for the GK Countryside Fair last weekend, I couldn't help but be curious. Drawn to the slogan "Eat, Shop, Help End Poverty", it appeared to offer me the chance to do two of my favourite things (eating and shopping), and yet this time not have to feel guilty about it - after all, it would be for a good cause! Certainly, anything arranged by GK was likely to be a far cry from the typical countryside fairs I had grown up with back in the UK, where old age pensioners and cake baking competitions tend to dominate proceedings. This was a countryside fair with a difference - the chance to show us city folk the magic of the Filipino countryside, as well as the vast potential it holds to bring this nation out of poverty.

Here's an interesting tidbit - CDO's new branch is actually one of the oldest buildings and a heritage site in the city! Preserving its historical facade, the store lets you experience the merry mix of the old and the new as Cagayan de Oro welcomes its loyal shoppers with our trademark modern Philippine look. This branch, also brandishing canopies, will be easy to spot since it sits in the corner of CDO City's two busiest streets - Hayes and Velez.
Unlike the old branch that used to be on the second floor, the new branch is now accessible even to Persons With Disabilities (PWDs). The branch operators intently looked for a location that will be convenient for everyone to access.

How the Golden Egg was Laid

It all started in 2011 when a group of aspiring entrepreneurs came across the mystical place called the Enchanted Farm, a Gawad Kalinga pilot site for social entrepreneurship. The Enchanted Farm, with all its attractions, is also an ecosystem for sustainable business ventures that help the poor. The entrepreneurs saw the magic in duck eggs and meat and decided to use this as a tool to put the Philippines on the map through developing a brand that is built on creating excellent products and generating social impact. Hence, 100 ducks later, the Golden Egg was laid and the social enterprise was born.
The Golden Egg is a salted duck egg. However, unlike the regular salted duck eggs in the market which are colored red, the Golden Egg uses a food-grade turmeric coloring. This sets it apart as it is also our mark of quality. The color represents the values hinged on every egg that is produced. Moreover, it is our way of educating our consumers, shouting out to them that natural products can have social effects too. What also adds value to this special product is the fact that there is only half the salt content found in the regular salted egg thus making the eggs easier to eat and fun to mix with different dishes or prepare unique dishes entriely such as salads, brushcettas, deviled eggs or even simple pandesal with Golden Eggs.

ECO-LIFESTYLE:Home Remedies - DIY Mosquito Trap
The 'ber' months have rolled in and it's almost the end of the rainy season; almost, but not quite just yet. To help you and your family stay protected from dengue, we'd like to share a simple DIY on how you can trap those pesky mosquitoes.
What you'll need:
| Empty 1.5L plastic bottle | |
| 1/4 cup brown sugar | |
| 1 gram yeast | |
| Water | |
| Black paper |
What to do:
| 1. | Cut the plastic bottle in half with a sharp knife |
| 2 | Mix 200ml of hot water with 1/4 cup of brown sugar. Let the sugar cool until it's about 40 degrees Celsius. |
| 3 | Pour the sugary water into the bottom half of the bottle and sprinkle the yeast on top. The yeast will react to the sugary water thus producing Carbon Dioxide which in turn will attract the mosquitoes. |
| 4 | Flip the top half of the bottle so that the mouth part is facing downward into the sugary water. Fit it snugly and as tightly as you can into the bottom half so that the CO2 is only coming out of the hold in the middle. |
| 5 | Cover the outer part of the bottle with black paper so it's dark inside, just the way mosquitoes like it. |
Make sure to replace the sugary water and yeast every 2 weeks. Also, don't forget to destroy all mosquito breeding sites such as old tires, tin cans, dish drainers, vases and pails and don't forget to stock up on your good 'ol Human Nature Bug Spray and Bug Shield.☺ Remember, prevention is better than cure!
