4 Things That Make You Attractive to Mosquitos

Camping season is here! And If you're that unlucky friend who always seems to attract all the mosquitoes wherever you go, then this article's for you. What makes certain people especially attractive to these itsy-bitey bugs? Turns out they look for a handful of factors when planning their strike:

1. People with blood type O are more attractive to mosquitoes.

This study finds that blood group O subjects attracted more mosquitoes (specifically, the Aedes albopictus, a mosquito that can transmit the viruses that cause dengue fever) than the other blood groups (A, B and AB).

2. Your sweat produces lactic acid which is an attractant for mosquitoes.

Sweating during a trek or a jog around the neighborhood may make you a target for mosquito bites, as found in studies herehere and here. Similar with carbon dioxide, mosquitoes get attracted by lactic acid which we humans produce when we sweat.

3. The more alcohol you consume, the more attractive you may be to mosquitoes.

Researchers found out that the percentage of mosquito landing on the study's volunteers significantly increased after beer ingestion compared with before ingestion. The same study theorizes that increase in ethanol concentration may be the reason behind this, while some theorize it's the increase in carbon dioxide emission and raised body temperature due to alcohol assumption, but none have yet to find strong enough supporting results.

4. Mosquitoes are attracted to pregnant women

… as much as twice compared to non-pregnant women! This is attributed to the physiological changes that occur during pregnancy, including an increase in carbon dioxide when exhaling.
