Be protected from mosquito borne diseases without the risk

Instances of mosquito-borne diseases go up during the rainy season. But before you reach for your 'trusty' insect repellent, think twice. There could be harmful chemicals lurking in that bottle.

DEET You Know
Most synthetic insect repellents contain DEET (N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide). DEET is a pesticide developed by the US military as an insect repellent in the 1940s. It was later registered for public use in 1957. At least 10 to 30 percent of DEET concentration is needed to effectively repel mosquitoes for two to four hours.

Despite being a popular active in synthetic insect repellents, DEET poses health risks that may do more harm than good. High concentration of DEET is considered toxic and unsafe for use. DEET is also linked to skin irritation, neurotoxicity, and can pass through the placenta.

DEET’s effectiveness in repelling mosquitoes also diminishes after prolonged exposure. A study cited by the Smithsonian Magazine showed that aedes aegypti mosquitoes become immune to DEET three hours after its initial exposure to an insect repellent with 20 percent DEET concentrate.
