Three ladies share their skincare journey and top skincare tips!
When it comes to a skincare routine, especially with keeping your skin younger-looking, the rule of thumb is the earlier the better. The mantra is once you've hit twenty, you've got to start investing in good-quality skin products.
And if you're past twenty reading this and thinking you've missed your chance at great-looking skin for the long run, don't panic just yet! There's still hope – as attested by three lovely ladies who started their own skincare routine in their mid-to-late 20's:
1. How old were you when you started your skin care routine?
Dia: I was about 23 when I started following a multi-step skin care routine.
Clarisse: I was 29 years old. To be specific, I started buying skincare products when I started working at Human Nature.
Tami: Not sure exactly what age but I’m pretty sure early-to-mid-twenties.
2. What did you do before that in terms of taking care of your skin?
Dia: Just the basics – facial wash and a tinted moisturizer.
Clarisse: I just used the facial wash my mom used.
Tami: Just facial wash.
3. What were your thoughts about skincare routines before having one? What made you start it?
Dia: What made me really commit to skin care was watching a morphing video that showed how a person’s skin changes from ages 18 to 68. It was interesting – for example, I found out that the area around the eyes is the first to show signs of ageing, and your neck shows signs of ageing too. So I doubled down on eye cream and neck cream.
Or, for example, I learned that the tight feeling I used to associate with a well-cleansed skin was actually my facial wash stripping away too much moisture from my face, so I switched to a gentler and more hydrating wash. All the information I absorbed served to teach me new and better ways to take care of my skin.
Clarisse: I thought it would be time-consuming since I’d be adding more steps in my simple routine plus there’s also the research that I’ll need to do to find which product I need. I also knew it would be expensive because I’d be buying at least a handful of products.
The catalyst for starting skin care routine is my age. At 29, I was advised by a workmate to start taking care of my skin (to use sunblock at least) and even start using anti-aging products.
Tami: Skin care wasn’t exactly high on my priorities then because I didn’t have really bad skin or anything, just the occasional zit. There was just one time in college when I had a lot of zits and went to the derma and gave me acne cream and said my skin type is dry, that’s when I started using moisturizer.
I think I started having more of a routine when I had more disposable income already, when I started working. I used to read a lot of magazines and the “experts” would always recommend prevention, starting your skin care as early as possible to minimize skin aging.
4. What's your skin care routine and what's your favorite Human Nature product in your routine?
Dia: In the morning, I wash my face with Human Nature’s Hydrating Creamy Wash using a Clarisonic. I follow this up with the Hydrating Face Toner. I’ve been using these since 2011. Then I use Human Nature’s Day Moisturizer on my face and neck down to my collar bones. At night, I use the Overnight Elixir – this is by far my favorite Human Nature product.
Once a week, I use a face mask for extra pampering. When I take long flights, I also use a moisturizing mask as soon as I get home (or sometimes on the plane) because my skin is used to Philippine weather – anything colder makes it dry and lackluster. Oh, and I drink lots of water – at least two litres per day.
Clarisse: My current morning routine is facial wash, toner, serum, eye cream, day cream and sunblock. My night routine is makeup remover, facial wash, toner, serum, eye cream, and night cream. I add in a mask once a month.
My favorite is Human Nature Cleansing Oil. It really removes waterproof makeup. And sometimes when I’m lazy, I don’t even go through the rest of my routine because my face already feels moisturized.
Tami: In the morning, I only wash with water or go straight to toner then eye cream, SPF and Day Moisturizer. At night, I remove my makeup with Sunflower Beauty Oil and tissue, and then facial wash and toner. Next is serum, concentrating most of it on my undereye area and just very thinly everywhere else. And then night moisturizer and Acne Defense Solution Gel if I have a zit.
My favorites are Human Nature Sunflower Beauty Oil and Hydrating Creamy Wash.
5. Any words of encouragement for those who're scared to try out their own skin care regimen?
Dia: For many people, the effects of proper skin care is not something they’ll really see and appreciate until they get older (unless they have problem skin). But I think once you hit your late 30's and beyond, you’ll start to appreciate that you still have smooth, fairly bouncy skin, you won’t have sun spots, and your neck will still be fairly firm. And then you’ll realize it was worth the effort – I know I did!
Clarisse: If there’s one product you should start using now, it’s sunscreen. Sun damage affects every one and accounts for most of skin aging.
Our skin's needs differ as we age and so that facial wash and harsh astringent you were using back in high school may not work the same way for your skin now. Your best bet is thorough research on knowing your skin type is and the best ingredients for it. Check out our skin care guide here.
