Why are sulfate-free products best for color-treated hair?

Most synthetic shampoos and conditioners use sulfates to clean hair. Sulfate is a strong detergent and it can strip protective oils and pigments like hair dye from strands. In a consumer test conducted by Azta Urban Salon among users with color treated hair, shampoos & conditioners with sulfate stripped off the hair’s color pigment within 2 days (or 3 washes). In contrast, those who used Human Nature Professional Salon Care line’s sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners experienced more pigmented and vibrant hair color for up to 1 week (or more than 7 washes).
