Why Your Skin is Dry and What You Can Do About It

When you find yourself Googling “dry skin problems”, “causes of dry skin” or “tips to moisturize skin”, it’s obviously a sign that you’re in dire need of resolving your dry skin dilemma ASAP! Finding the right moisturizer could seem like a hit and miss, especially when your favorite shopping app offer all sorts of lotions and other skincare products ~:*you think you need*:~ but really, how do you know what’s best without understanding first what’s making your skin dry, right?

Trivia: Your skin can lose up to 400mL or about 2 glasses of water A. DAY.1 Surprise! When this happens faster than the body can replace lost moisture, it can lead to dry, irritated skin or what science calls ~:*Transepidermal Water Loss*:~. or TEWL. Before you start worrying, just so you know, it’s not as bad as it sounds! TEWL is a natural process and there are safe, easy and pocket-friendly ways to help slow it down.

Now, let’s look into day-to-day factors affecting skin dryness and what you can do to easily address them:

1. Temperature changes

Ever noticed why your skin seems drier during the colder months? This is because the skin tends to dry faster when humidity levels are low.2 Similarly, staying long hours in cool, air-conditioned rooms may disturb the skin and cause it to dry out. On the contrary, during warmer days, relatively high humidity helps keep skin from drying out.

What you can do: Hydrate!  Hydrate! Hydrate! Drink your water and let H2O do its skin replenishing magic for a healthy feeling, healthy looking glow!

2. Cleansing habits

Just like how weather changes affect the skin, showers can also trigger TEWL. Longer, hotter baths may cause your pores to open, allowing more moisture to evaporate from your skin. Strong soaps may also strip down the skin’s natural moisture barrier, making it dry or irritated.

What you can do: Take shorter, cooler showers. Not only do cold showers increase your heart rate and get your blood flowing, it also helps tighten pores and retain your natural oils. Turning to natural bar soaps that are free from harsh chemicals that may disrupt your skin’s natural moisture barrier is a good way to go, too. Skin absorption is best after bath so better establish your cleanse and quench habit and apply your trusty natural body lotion (or body butter for a deeper moisturization upgrade!) as your next step!

3. Beauty products

Speaking of lotions and how they’re best absorbed by the skin after bath, did you know that not all skincare well… takes good care of the skin? Chemical products containing whitening ingredients, parabens, synthetic fragrances and mineral oil can do more harm than good to the skin.3 Those with high pH levels can rapidly diminish the skin's supply of natural oils, resulting in moisture loss, too. Yikes!

What you can do: Read the label. Choose lotions and moisturizers free from harmful chemicals and synthetic ingredients.  Rather, look for genuinely natural bath and body essentials that are also free from skin irritant mineral oil. Choose lotions and body butters rich in skin-replenishing emollients like coconut oil and glycerin, as these naturally form a protective layer on the skin, preventing moisture from escaping.
