A play on the word "Pilipino", Pili (select) & Pino (fine) is inspired by all that is delicious and indigenous to the Philippines! Pili & Pino sources the anchor ingredient of their granola, coconut syrup, from their farming community partners in Mindanao. Pili & Pino uses mango, pineapple, banana, and cacao from communities in Visayas and Mindanao.

This social enterprise product isn’t available yet for delivery outside the Philippines. But we’re hoping to share the goodness to even more people soon!

With all the healthful ingredients this product contains, my husband and I did not hesitate to buy a few packs when it first came out. We enjoyed the texture of the granola, but the product had a very off-putting smell (It was akin to a bottle of wheat germ I had neglectfully placed in the kitchen cupboard a few years back). This granola indeed has wheat germ upon checking the ingredients list. It's disappointing to know that Pili & Pino has yet to consider proper storage of their products. It states on the packaging and on Human Nature's website that the granola must be stored in an airtight container, in a cool, dry place after opening. Wheat germ should always be refrigerated, not stored at room temperature, even in Western climates. Whether the germ is raw or has been toasted, the polyunsaturated fats and oils in it easily turn rancid, and the germ rots quickly as soon as it is exposed to heat, light, humidity, and air. Even wheat germ that has been stored in the fridge can easily turn rancid if proper storage was not observed. We chose not to consume the two remaining packs that we bought as we do not want to cause further intestinal distress and destroy our body's supply of certain vitamins. Rancid oils produce damaging chemicals and substances that may not only make us immediately ill, but can cause harm to our bodies over time. I hope Pili & Pino will look further into this matter. [EDITOR'S NOTE: Hi jen! Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. We've forwarded your concern to Pili & Pino, who reviewed their ingredients, storage, and preparation technique with their food technologist. Upon verification with their wheat germ supplier, they confirmed that while refrigeration is recommended for wheat germ, it is not required. Wheat germ has a shelf life of 12 months, with an additional 6 months extension past this date if refrigerated or frozen. In terms of storage and transit conditions, the finished product should be kept in a cool, dry place and avoid extreme temperature changes or prolonged exposure to heat and humidity. Thus, the current labeling, “Keep in a cool, dry place” is correct. However, as an additional step, the packaging will now be reflecting this: "Keep in a cool, dry place. Seal and refrigerate after opening." Pili & Pino is continuing the review of the products that they currently have and appreciates the feedback that you sent. :) Do let us know if you have any further concerns and we would be happy to help. Thanks again!
